Seven Km east of the City, set on a ridge,
is the Lalitha Mahal Palace, a European-Classical
two storied Palace, built by Majaraja Krishnaraja
Wodeyar in 1931 for special guests from overseas.
Designed by E. W. Fritchley in Renaissance
style with a Italian Plaza and an English Manor
concept a much
patronized Bombay based architect of those
days, the building at a cost of 13 lakhs
and composition of twin lonic columns, a
projecting porch on the ground floor,
spherical domes, the circular entrance hall,
dominating central dome and the stained |

|
glass embellishment present a regal touch.
Its central dome is modeled on St. Paul's Cathedral,
London. Its luxurious interiors are
embellished with the finest of local craftsmanship
as well as imported luxury fittings. The
palace has now been converted into a heritage hotel
which is part of the state owned ITDC. |
